Thyroid
Thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland that lies in the front neck just over the trachea. It is an endocrine gland that weighs only 20 to 30 grams on average. This gland secrets two important hormones: T3 (Triiodothyronine) and T4 (Thyroxine). These two hormones play an important role in metabolism, growth and mental development. Thyroid gland must function properly throughout the life to keep one healthy. But now-a-days thyroid disease has become a global health issue.
In Bangladesh, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), Sylhet has been providing treatment and services to such thyroid patients for more than 40 years. In INMAS, Sylhet different types of thyroid diseases like goiter, thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer are diagnosed and treated by thyroid specialists.

Treatment given for following thyroid diseases by INMAS, Sylhet:
1. Hyperthyroidism (Grave’s disease, Toxic adenoma, Toxic MNG)
2. Hypothyroidism
3. Post operative treatment for differentiated thyroid carcinoma (Papillary and follicular Ca)
4. Thyroiditis
Contraindication of radioiodine and radionuclide use in diagnosis:
1. Pregnant ladies -- Absolute Contraindication
2. Lactating mother -- Relative Contraindication
Diagnostic tests of thyroid diseases:
1. In vitro tests: T3, T4, FT3, FT4, TSH, Anti TPOAb, Tg and Anti Tg Ab are analyzed here by RIA (radioimmunoassay) and CLIA(Chemiluminescence immunoassay) methods.
2. Ultrasound imaging of thyroid gland: In this test, 5-10 M Hz probe is used to see the size and shape of thyroid gland and to diagnosis the structural defects of the gland. Color Doppler study is also being done .
3. Thyroid scan: In this test, 3-5 mili Curie of 99m TC is injected intravenously to the patient and scan is done after 20 minutes to see functional status, the size and shape of thyroid gland, congenital thyroid abnormalities and evaluate the amount of residual thyroid tissue after surgery. Images are taken by planer gamma camera.
4. Thyroid uptake test: In this test, minimum 5-10 micro Curie of radioiodine is orally administrated to the patient. After 2 and 24 hours, radioiodine activity is counted by uptake machine. This test is used to see the functional status of thyroid gland.
